Use Your B.R.A.I.N.!

Let's face it..making decisions can be nerve wrecking and daunting, Should I buy this car? Should I pay for this expensive trip right now? Should I eat this last piece of chocolate cake????? You get the point! There are some decisions that are more complicated than others. Of those decisions are ones concerning pregnancy and birth options and treatments. There will inevitably be an occurence for some prenatally, during labor, and even after birth where a decision will need to be made. While it can be stressful, there is a way to ensure that you are able to give informed consent for your medical needs. In any instance, we want to use the acronym B.R.A.I.N. This stands for:

B - Benefits: What are the benefits of the suggested course of action?

R - Risks - What are the risks associated with the suggested course of action?

A- Alternatives - What other options do I have INSTEAD of the suggested course of action?

I- Implications - What other things could possibly happen if I decide to follow the suggested course of action?

N - Nothing - What if I choose to take a couple of hours to talk this over with someone else or think it through?

Informed consent is extremely important and shouls ALWAYS be granted and employed. NEVER make a decision on impulse or based off of intimidation or fear. Remember, you are your best advocate for yourself AND your unborn child. Make your decisions wisely.
